Walter Raymond Dejean Iii

Waler Raymond DeJean III was the first born to Walter Raymond DeJean Jr. and Mamie Katherine Carter DeJean. Walter was born in New Orleans, LA in the Sara Mayo Hospital on Sunday, February 10, 1957 and found in death on Monday, February 10, 2025 in Temple, TX.  Walter is survived by his mother, Mamie. Survived by his younger brother Elgin Anthony DeJean Sr, along with Elgin’s wife Tish Byrd DeJean and their two children: Nephew, Elgin A. DeJean Jr, (wife Michelle) and niece Alexis Marie DeJean all who reside in Indianapolis, IN. He is survived by his sister, Ronda DeJean Lewis and her husband Charlie Denver Lewis, (Temple, Tx) and their two children: Niece: Chloe D. Lewis (Fort Worth, TX) and Nephew, Charleston D. Lewis (Houston, TX) and a great niece Alessandria Lewis and great nephew Lincoln Lewis.  Walter is survived also by his daughter Danielle Simone DeJean who resides in the state of Maryland. Other family survived by Walter are uncle Frank Carter’s children: Janice, Kim, Giselle and Simon, and his uncle Charlie’s son Lil Charlie Carter, and host of other cousins.  Passed on before Walter were the Carter uncles, Frank, Charles, and Kenny and his grandmother Abbie Mae Carter Trotman and grandfather Frank Z. Carter.

Walter growing up in New Orleans, La was known to his brother and sister as the comedian of the family. He was intelligent being crowned the smartest boy of his elementary school in 6th grade at McDonogh 42, and he graduated in top 10% of his class from the designated Gifted High School in his district McDonogh 35 in 1975.   He loved collecting the 33 rpm albums and 45 rpm records and comic books. He loved history. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La with a BA degree in 1980.  He went into the work world shortly after but found a far more fulfilling career in the Marine Corp 4 years, which led him to a long-lasting career working for the Federal Government 30 years in the Security department for the Smithsonian Institute in the Washington, DC, and Maryland areas.  He retired in 2019 after living primarily in Prince George County MD. Then Walter moved to Temple, Texas. He lived with his sister and brother-in-law for a short time and then moved to his own apartment near his mother Mamie, so he can help her. He helped her by delivering to her a daily newspaper, driving her to doctor appointments and grocery shopping, and making trips for her favorite fast-food pickups. He also provided company to Mamie where they would watch sports on tv together often.  Sports watching with them was exciting. Walter was a walking “statistic reporter” he could tell you the history and stats of almost every team and every team player, no matter what sport, professional and college. His memory IQ was super high for stats and history.

Walter would tell everyone he moved to Temple to help his mom.  Over time, he became too ill to continue to help his mom effectively.   He was getting care at the VA hospital and then through Baylor Scott and White. Walter had multiple emergency department admits to Baylor Scott and White Hospital recently and spent some time in rehab.  Though he was battling chronic illness his death was still not expected so quickly.  The family appreciates your thoughts in prayers during their time of loss.
