Verkery Berdette (Darling) Johnson McKinley was born April 11, 1933 to Kervelle Johnson and Florence Hurd Johnson in Bartlett, Texas. Verkery was raised in Bartlett, and attended Booker T. Washington School. She finished her education in 1951 in Bartlett Texas and later lived in Los Angeles, California. Verkery was married to William “Dub” McKinley of Rogers, Texas who preceded her in death. She was a faithful member of Saint James United Methodist Church and served as the Usher President for many years. Verkery was also a Worthy Matron in the Eastern Star Lodge—Martha Chapter #35. Verkery worked as a caregiver and was a devoted wife who cared for her husband until his departure from this life. She is preceded in death by her parents Kervelle and Florence Johnson, Sister Lavanthus Kay (Baby Kay) Johnson, Lois (Faye) Johnson, Jo Nell Johnson White and her brother Henry Freeman Johnson, Sr. Left to cherish her memory is sister Mae West Lane and brother Clarence Wilson both of Killeen, Texas; sister-in-law Iris Johnson of San Antonio, Texas and devoted niece and caretaker Sharon Nealy. She was well loved by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
