Sandra Jean Herron, age 62, passed away the morning of April 12, 2021. She was born on August 15, 1958, in Amarillo, Texas, and the oldest daughter of Henderson Starkes Herron and Thelma Marie Herron, Sandra was raised in a loving and faith-based home, which led to her accepting Christ at the early age of 10, and baptism at Salem Baptist Church in Champaign, Illinois. She was a remarkable Sunday School teacher; and she enjoyed singing in the church choir. While living in Austin, Texas, she became a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church; and later Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. Sandra graduated as an Honor Student from the University of Illinois High School in Champaign Illinois, a school dedicated to academically gifted and talented students. She was on the cheerleading squad, enjoyed playing tennis, and an avid learner of her favorite language, French. As a student who excelled academically, she also graduated with honors from the University of Illinois in Champaign. After relocating to Austin, Texas with the family, she applied to the University of Texas in Austin with a major in pre-law. Prior to retiring, Sandra was employed by the State of Texas Comptroller Office.
Sandra was a kind and courageous person who sadly struggled with mental illness. She battled with her illness until her body could no longer fight. Her death does not define her legacy: Sandra had talents, made contributions, and touched others’ lives in meaningful ways. She was preceded in death by her parents Henderson Starkes Herron and Thelma Marie Herron, and her brother William Reginald Herron. Sandra leaves behind to cherish memories of her life:two sisters; Annette Makransky (Tony) of Friendswood, TX and Toni McReynolds (Jack) of Murphy, TX; one niece; Makaela McReynolds and four nephews; Reggie Herron, Andrew Makransky, Anthony Makransky, Matthew McReynolds (Brooke), grandniece Kiara Herron Perez (Michael), grandnephews Roman and Judah McReynolds; Hazel Mathews Cobb (Aunt), Sylvia Burrow (former sister-in-law), and a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends.
