Marlene Shambee was born on February 22, 1937, to Humphrey and Beatrice Shambee. Marlene had many brothers and sisters. Marlene graduated from DuSable High School in 1955. In 1957 Marlene married John Edward Smith. Four children were born to this union, Ivy Jean, John Webster, David Paul, and Beverly Ann. Marlene also had another child, Mark Daniel. Ivy preceded her in death.

In 1961 Marlene completed nursing school and became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Marlene worked for the Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Chicago for many years. Marlene also worked for the Board of Health, Walgreens and Bethel Terrace.

In 1991 Marlene was united in Holy Matrimony to Levorn Jennings Jr. God blessed their marriage as He blended two families into one. He preceded her in death.

Marlene gave her life to the Lord as a teenager. Marlene was a faithful member of Englewood Church of God for many years. Later in life Marlene became a devoted member and trustee of Lodebar Church and Ministries.

Everyone who knew or was around Marlene was touched by her kindness and loving spirit. Marlene loved to send cards to everyone with a kind word and $5 for lunch. Marlene also wrote many letters of encouragement to young men and women in prison or jail.

On July 13, 2024, God blessed her faithfulness and took to heaven peacefully while she slept at her son and daughter in laws home. She will be missed in the natural, but her spirit is alive with Lord. She loved the Lord and was a good and faithful servant. Her faithful life shows we should “Choose Jesus to be our Lord and Savior”.

She leaves many memories that will live on with her children, John (Regina), David (Tracey), Beverly and Mark, her sister Alexandria, brother Edward, sisters in law Debbie and Yevonn. Seventeen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and the family of God.
