Lorena Mae Hines was born in Brenham, Texas, Washington, County on August 13, 1930 to the parents of T.J. Hines, Sr. and Mattie Hines. Lorena was the oldest of three children. Her parents and two younger brothers preceded her in death.

Lorena received her formal education in Brenham, Texas schools. During her high school years, Lorena’s family relocated to Cameron, Texas.

While living in Cameron, Lorena met Verdell Canady. Verdell and Lorena entered into holy matrimony at Jerusalem Baptist Church on December 30, 1961. The happily married couple lived in Cameron for several years before moving to Temple, Texas. Lorena worked for many years for a prominent Temple family as a housekeeper.

On January 2, 1966, Verdell and Lorena Canady united with Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. C.S. Williamson. Lorena was a member of the Mary’s Circle and a dedicated Deaconess. She was a faithful member of Mt. Zion until her health prevented her from attending services. Lorena was extremely honored to serve for many years as the wife of the First Vice President of the St. John District Brotherhood Association, her dear husband, Verdell Canady.

Lorena was an avid gardener and spent countless hours planting flowers and reading her favorite Southern Living and Better Homes & Gardens magazines. She was most proud to be the loving grandmother to her five, beautiful granddaughters and two grandsons.

Lorena was preceded in death by her parents, T.J. Hines Sr and mother Mattie Hines and her brothers T.J. Hines Jr. and Curtis Hines.

Left to cherish her memory and legacy is her loving husband of 63 years, Deacon Verdell Canady and her two sons CW03 Steve Johnson (Elsa) of San Antonio, Tx and Dornell Hines Canady (Betty) of Northglenn, Colorado. She is also survived by grandchildren Christina Johnson, Theresa Johnson, Dr. Shaun Tay Canady, April Sheree Canady, Korey Preston, Joshua Preston and Tenna Obajinmi.
